Why We Love Summer Camp (and What Kids Gain From It)
Summer camp isn't just childcare — it's an experience kids remember for years.
Summer will be here before you know it, and many families are already starting to think about how to fill those long school-free days.
For some families, summer means vacations and travel. For others, it means backyard adventures, pool days, and neighborhood bike rides. But for many kids, one of the most exciting parts of summer is going to camp.
Whether it's a half-day camp, a full-day program, or a specialty camp focused on sports, theater, art, animals, STEM, or outdoor adventure — summer camp gives kids a chance to try new things, meet new friends, and discover what they’re capable of.
Kids get to try new things
One of the best things about summer camp is that it introduces kids to activities they might never try during the regular school year.
Depending on the camp, children may get to explore things like:
- Horseback riding
- Rock climbing
- Dance or theater
- Science experiments or robotics
- Art, crafts, or music
- Cooking or culinary skills
- Nature exploration and outdoor adventures
Camp allows kids to explore new interests in a relaxed environment where curiosity is encouraged.
Confidence grows naturally
Not every child shines in the classroom or on the sports field, but camp often provides opportunities for kids to discover strengths they didn't know they had.
Learning a new skill, performing in a small show, finishing a challenge course, or simply making a new friend can build confidence in powerful ways.
Camp also helps kids practice teamwork, leadership, and communication — all while having fun.
Kids get to move their bodies
After spending most of the school year sitting in classrooms, summer camp is a great reminder of how good it feels to move.
Outdoor play, sports, swimming, games, and hands-on activities help kids burn energy and stay active.
Research consistently shows that physical activity improves mood, reduces stress, and can even help improve focus and attention — something every parent appreciates by the time school starts again.
Independence and responsibility develop
Camp gives kids small but meaningful opportunities to practice independence.
They may choose their own activities, manage their belongings, follow a daily schedule, and learn how to solve small problems on their own.
All of this happens in a safe environment with supportive counselors and staff.
These experiences help children build independence, resilience, and self-reliance — skills that carry into school and everyday life.
Choosing the right camp for your child
Every child is different, which means the best camp for one child might not be the best for another.
When choosing a camp, consider things like:
- Your child’s interests
- Age range and skill level
- Camp location and schedule
- Staff training and safety policies
- Camper-to-counselor ratio
- Activities offered each day
Getting your child involved in the decision can make a big difference. When kids feel excited about the camp they are attending, the experience is usually much more successful.
If it's your child's first camp, you might even consider attending with a friend to make the transition easier.
